Been a real struggle to get rain down here all though places further east got a bit of a soaking from thunderstorms on Thursday.
Another prolonged spell of settled, and probably quite summery, weather coming up from midweek as high pressure establishes across the UK. In time, this may drift north and allow easterly winds across England which means low cloud in the east and the chance of thunder in the south but thats a few days off yet :)

Dave, despite all the hype about rain appearing overnight for us, we woke up to two dead leaves in the rain gauge & damp decked patio. Where on earth is the heavy rain promised by the Met. Office? A bit of mizzle will not do! :x Jean & Graham

I think that we here in Bristol got your rain Jean. It started just after 1 am and it's been raining on and off all day, sometimes really heavy rain.

So what's on the cards for this week Dave?

7.5mm overnight in north Hampshire - about as much as we've had in the past three months put together. Hopefully it'll bring on a flush of new moth emergence...

Did a moth-ing last night & was able to empty the trap before an occasional short shower. Can't complain now, protection over the moths in egg boxes proved timely. It is now 4.50pm & it is hammering down with rain after a short hail shower. Thank goodness for some wet stuff going into the soil. :D Jean & Graham

Yesterday was a strange one really. It started cold having dipped to 4.4C overnight. The sun appeared briefly enough for Cheryl to spot a Humming-bird Hawk-Moth on the Salvias at 0730 before the rain arrived.......then it just kept on and on. Temperatures actually peaked in the evening at 13.4C and that was the level at midnight. I notice Winchester's automatic station recorded 22.4mm, similar to Mike.
Summer appears to have been consigned to the bin for a while now. High Pressure across Greenland is assisting the jet stream on its way too southerly course into the UK with no major changes showing in the computer predictions. What does it all mean?......well my hunch is that many places will see a fair amount of heavy(and possibly thundery) rain on Thursday before another wet spell arrives on Saturday. All in all not summerlike with temperatures cooler again by the weekend

Looking quite accurate your thoughts, Dave. I recorded 18mm yesterday, but so far, today hasn't turned out quite as wet as the Met Office were forecasting. Gonna cause tonight's New Forest BioBlitz to be a damp squib though, unfortunately, as I suspect there won't be too many moth-ers venturing out. I shan't be chancing it.

Mike

Well Friday did eventually bring a lot of rain here and yesterday had plenty of showers. Not a great week ahead either with low pressure rolling into the UK. Rain or showers about on most days I would expect, and not that warm either. Watch out for cold nights late in the week
