Went down to -9.3C here last night, the coldest I've recorded.

Bird numbers have been high - working from home and watching the feeders, yesterday's counts were:

Starling 12
Blackbird 5
Blackcap 1
Chaffinch 15
Greenfinch 2
Dunnock 2
Blue Tit 2
Mistle Thrush 1
Pied Wagtail 2
Collared Dove 1
Woodpigeon 2
House Sparrow 5
Goldfinch 6
Great Tit 2
Robin 2
Song Thrush 1
and fly-over Black-headed Gull, Buzzard and a Red Kite.

14 Chaffinch are shown in this pic :)

Far more than I'm getting here in Greywell. Maximum over the last three days is:
Robin 1 (very territorial)
Blue Tit 6
Great Tit 3
Long-tailed Tit 5
Blackbird 3
Starling 1
Dunnock 1
Chaffinch 1
Also there are 5 House Sparrows that sit in a bush but don't appear to feed!

The starlings are devouring the goose carcase left over from krimbo, but my garden seems to be the exception. Most seem to be reporting empty gardens, and I had a neighbour this afternoon bemoaning how he'd recently got in a load of birdfood but there's nothing on his feeders.

Just a pic or two of today's Redwing & Fieldfare - Graham was going 'hammer & tongs with his camera (not great thru double glazing). Thank goodness for birds at this time of year :D Jean & Graham

Redwing is one of the more obvious omissions from my garden list (well, I've recorded them 'zitting' as it flies over at night when emptying the trap in the autumn, but never in the garden itself). Only ever had 2 Fieldfare, too. Nice ones, Jean.

OK, I'm going to have to start a birds sub-forum! :o :D

Added a Mistle Thrush to the feeder list yesterday and a male Blackcap today. There were 2 Fieldfare and 2 Redwing in the garden on Christmas Day but I haven't seen them since.

Hi all,

Just when you think it's all over, it starts snowing again!
Roll on the spring when lepidoptera are flying.

Lots of birds in the garden at the moment. Fieldfares, Redwings, Blackcaps and a Grey Wagtail are my winter visitors, along with all the usual thrushes, tits and general garden birds.

Wishing you all the best on this site Mike.

Denise

Another 7cm (of snow) here in Sherborne St John, on top of most of the 20cm still remaining from the other week.

Excellent for cross-country skiing still, and even managed a couple of hours on the downhill skis on runs which had been nicely compacted by toboganners. It just needs some enterprising local to set up a drag lift somewhere.

I didn't know you had downhill skis Nick! I've got a pair of skiboots in the loft, if this carries on I might ask to borrow them... how about skiing down Beacon Hill?
