I had seen one baby fox in the semi wooded area beyond my front gate last week, and every morning, there are newly dug little holes, and some of my prunings strewn over the path...tonight, I saw 4-6 fat bundles of fur, all running about with mum. Several of them same almost up to me before scurrying off again into the undegrowth!

Also spotted two pipistrelles zooming about, having spotted them for the first time this year, last week.

With the airspace over the UK being closed, the peace is quite astonishing. There is a lot of(mostly high level) traffic over Sheffield, and I simply hadn't realised how much background noise they contribute. Every day is like a Sunday morning, and when the traffic stops, it's wonderful, even though I love watching planes. Just sitting out listening to the birds is heaven.

What a privilege. 8-)

Sounds like you are going to have some regular fun visitors now then Ange lol.

Yes, the silence really is golden isnt it. We arent under a low flight path as such, even though we are relatively close to Gatwick, but it is certainly noticeable. We should enjoy it while it lasts hey.

If we could stop all the road traffic too, the bird song would be even better (apart from the monotonous Chiff Chaff) - such a pretty little bird to look at though.

Would love to see your fox cubs, Ange. Lucky you. Any chance of some photos or is their visitation always in murky light?

We are unfortunately on a flight path to Exeter Airport, at the point when the planes throttle back to aproach the runway a few miles on. The noise of this procedure has to be heard to be believed - drowning out the sound of our tv or radio :x so we are more than happy about the reprieve. We still have the helicopters of Devon Air Ambulance & worse, the police helicopter which circles over the area (especially on a Saturday night). The base for these two is about a mile or so past our bungalow. We'd love to move but the work & money involved is prohibitive. Never mind, maybe one day (sigh!) Jean

I'd love to get some photos too, but I doubt they would pose while I whip out the torch and camera!

Jean

Ah the police helicopter, I know that sound well too! Dreadful. Though if they are catching crims, I won't grumble too much.

I figured out something this evening. They do come out in the light, and they don't mind the torch and flash photography!

I braved the cold to snap a few. Not great, but they are so cute.

Enchanting Ange, always worth a try. No matter how we try to convey experiences in words, pics are worth a thousand of them. Well done :D Jean

I think this thread should be in Natural History where your lovely fox cubs will appeal to a wider audience :) Jean

Oh here it is! You could tell me when you are going to move my stuff. Just kidding.

Well, I just had a close encounter with a cub. One was particularly brave and came right up to me and had a nibble on my shoe! Some of them are getting used to me and the sound of my voice...Tink is not keen on them though and is quite jumpy atm. Fabulous. 8-)
