This lovely hoverfly was approx 15-16mm long. He was in the bath (no water) so I potted him & put him out on one of my Maxillaria potted orchids to warm up. Both Graham & I got a few photos from different angles. I can't seem to id him so wondered if any-one else can - Linda maybe. Help would be appreciated. :) Jean

Hi Jean

Sorry I didnt see this sooner - been a bit hectic these last couple of weeks or so. A superb set of shots of it. I think its Helophilus trivittatus - checked the markings and legs in my Stubbs and Faulk and reasonably certain thats the one. Think yours might be a female as it looks a bit plump although I cant fully see the eyes at the top (females have a gap between the eyes).

Linda

Thanks for that Linda. It's strange but we haven't noticed H. trivittatus in the garden before but they have appeared frequently this year - all different sizes & almost everywhere that we've been, including during our trip to Somerset. :) Jean
