2034 Gypsy Moth (Lymantria dispar) (Linnaeus, 1758) - (Lymantriidae / Lymantriinae)


Status: Vagrant/Accidental
Notes: Rare immigrant, mainland Europe, appearing as a migrant on the south coast of Britain. Wingspan male 48-53mm, female 59-65mm. Females nocturnal, males fly during the day; July to August. Frequents fens, woodland, scrub, parkland, parks a nd gardens. Larva April to late June, having over-wintered as an egg, no evidence of breeding in the UK. Larva feeds on Bog Myrtle and Creeping Willow, causing sufficient damage to be a serious pest in some areas.
