Notes:
Common throughout much of the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight widespread and common. Wingspan 4.5-5.5 mm. Red- and black-headed forms co-exist, and were previously considered to be two distinct species. Adults difficult to distinguish from other Stigmella species, and more frequently recorded in the larval stage, when mines are relatively easy to find where they are present. Larva mines leaves of Hawthorn, over-wintering as a pupa. Occupied mines are very common in May and June and again between August and September. The mines are described in the following link: leafmines.co.uk .
