0302a Parornix carpinella (Frey, 1863) - (Gracillariidae / Gracillariinae)

Notes: Nationally scarce (Na) in woodland in south-eastern England. In Hampshire found at a handful of sites, including Bentley Station Meadow, mainly in the north of the county. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 8-10 mm. Larva mines leaves of Hornbeam, subsequently living within a leaf-fold, over-wintering as a pupa in a cocoon. Imago seldom encountered at light, and more likely to be recorded in the larval stage, when mines are relatively easy to find where they are present. The leaf mine resembles P. tenerella but has a mottled lower surface.
