Classification

Family:Oecophoridae
Subfamily:Oecophorinae
Genus:Schiffermuelleria
Species:schaefferella
Authority:(Linnaeus, 1758)

One was taken at light in Petersham, Surrey on 28 May 2012. Thought originally to be S. grandis, which itself would have been new for the county, it was retained and subsequently identified as the present species, new for Britain. S. schaefferella differs from the very similar grandis by having a shorter black basal costal mark and lacking the bold silvery-white marks near the apex and tornus of the forewing, amongst other minor differences. The larvae feed on rotting timber. S. schaefferella appears to be spreading in northern Europe, being new to the Netherlands in 2006 and Sweden in 1993.
