0873a Blastobasis vittata (Wollaston, 1858) - (Blastobasidae / Blastobasinae)

Status: Adventive
Notes: Naturalised through accidental introduction. Originally probably endemic to Madeira, like the majority of its congeners, now naturalised, but how it reached Britain remains a mystery. First recorded in the British Isles in Lindfield, West Sussex on 15 September 2008, with a second turning up in the same county on 26 August 2009. The relative close proximity of these three records both temporally and spatially would strongly indicate that it is established in the southern counties of our island. Interestingly, one of the junior synonyms of vittata is lignea (Walsingham, 1894), which until relatively recently was considered as a species that was previously on the British list in its own right, before being re-identified as B. adustella. The specimen illustrated was caught by Brian Elliott at a meeting held on Sandy Point, Hayling Island on 19 September 2009 for National Moth Night, and is therefore the first for Hampshire and Isle of Wight. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight to date.
