Nationally scarce (Nb) on dry pastures, downland and sand-dunes throughout much of the British Isles. In Hampshire locally common in and around Portsmouth, elsewhere in the county and on the Isle of Wight very uncommon and erratic in appearance. Wingspan 10-13 mm. Reminiscent of G. janthinana in general appearance but usually larger and recognised by the extensive and pronounced violet-plumbeous suffusion of the forewing which in G. janthinana is pinkish or purplish ochreous; the male of G. janthinana is distinguished by the presence of the blackish scales and hair-like cilia in the tornal area of the hindwing [Bradley]. Larva feeds on seeds of Wild Carrot, Wild Parsnip, Hogweed, Wild Angelica, Milk-parsley and similar, over-wintering in a cocoon.
