Common in woodland, hedgerows, gardens and scrub; 0-400 m (0-1750 m in Europe) throughout much of England, Wales, north-western Scotland and Ireland; mainland Europe and southern Scandinavia. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight widespread and common. Wingspan 47-50 mm. Larva feeds on Cock's-foot and Common Couch.
