Common in calcareous grassland, acid heathland, woodland rides, roadside verges, sand-dunes and gardens throughout the British Isles, a species of conservation concern under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight much less common that in the past, however large colonies still occur locally in dunes and amongst scrub on downland. Wingspan 34-38 mm. Only likely to be confused with unseasonably early examples of Mallow Larentia clavaria, which see. Larva feeds on White Clover, Red Clover, Hare's-foot Clover and Vetch.
