Very rare immigrant (less than 10 previous UK records) from southern Europe, appearing on the south coast, known from Kent in July 1886 and Devon in 1901, 1902 and 1945 (two), with no further records to date. Not recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 32-36 mm. Main confusion species is Vine's Rustic Hoplodrina ambigua which is greyer with a whiter hindwing. Larva feeds on Dandelion, Greater Plantain, Ribwort Plantain and various other herbaceous plants; no evidence of breeding in the UK.
