A rare Red Data Book species, in ancient woodland, thickets and copses, in six 10km squares in Suffolk and at single sites in Norfolk and north Essex. Not recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 28-32 mm. Fan-foot Zanclognatha tarsipennalis has the male antenna dilate, the forewing postmedian fascia frequently not dentate, and the terminal line broken or blurred; in Small Fan-foot Herminia grisealis, which is smaller, the subterminal fascia is evenly curved from apex to dorsum (MBGBI Vol 10). Larva feeds on withered leaves of Bramble.
