Local in damp woodland and thickets, fens, marshes and by river-banks in England, Wales and southern Scotland; rare in Ireland. In Hampshire the population is centred on Botley Wood, from Eastleigh, Chandler's Ford, Swanwick NR, Wickham Common and The Moors, Bishop's Waltham in the north and west, to Southsea in the south-east; elsewhere recorded from Leckford and Eelmoor Marsh in the north of the county and the Avon Valley in the south. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight since 1979. Wingspan 17-19 mm. Most likely to be confused with A. liturosa, which has a deep purplish brown forewing. Larva feeds within young shoots of White Willow, Crack Willow, Osier, Goat Willow, Grey Willow, Eared Willow and Creeping Willow, beneath a silken web.
