Local in woodland throughout much of the British Isles, south of Inverness-shire. In Hampshire recorded less than annually from scattered localities across the county, and still rare on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 10-14 mm. Distinguished from Phtheochroa sodaliana by its smaller size, the generally darker coloration of the forewing, and the relatively whiter hindwing of the male and dark greyish fuscous hindwing of the female [Bradley]. Larva feeds within seedheads of Bluebell.
