49.177 [B&F: 1071] Argyroploce arbutella (Linnaeus, 1758)

Nationally scarce (Na) on moorland and in mountains throughout much of the Scottish Highlands, down to sea level in the Hebrides and western Ireland. Unlikely to be recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 13-16 mm. A distinctly smaller species than O. mygindiana; distinguished by its purplish red to ferruginous-red head, which in O. mygindiana is purplish brown, and by the more uniform reddish purple ground coloration and distinctly transverse striations of the forewing [Bradley]. Larva feeds on Bearberry, living within a spun or rolled leaf.
