Nationally scarce (Na) in pine woodland in parts of southern England, rare elsewhere. In Hampshire there has been no record since the 1930s, although one was found on the Isle of Wight at Shanklin in August 1984. Wingspan 12-16 mm. Differs from Z. ratzeburgiana by the smaller, obtusely angled basal patch of the forewing, the fasciate band of ground colour between the basal patch and median fascia which in Z. ratzeburgiana is constricted medially, and by its darker hindwing [Bradley]. Larva feeds on Scots Pine, living between needles spun together with silk, over-wintering as an egg.
