Common in grassland and rough meadows throughout the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight common in boggy areas, where f. warringtonellus predominates, and on chalk downland, more occasional elsewhere. Wingspan 22-29 mm. Creamy white with a silken lustre; f. warringtonellus is heavily streaked; both forms are easily recognised [Goater]. Larva feeds on stems of various grasses, living within a silken gallery at the base of the plant.
