A rare Red Data Book species, in quarries, woodland, sea cliffs, downland, roadside verges and woodland edges; 0-400 m (0-2300 m in Europe) in parts of England, more numerous in the south, Wales, southern Scotland and Ireland; mainland Europe and southern Scandinavia. In Hampshire most likely to be encountered in the Lymington and Keyhaven area, but still relatively common on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 44-46 mm. Larva feeds on Cock's-foot, False-brome, Yorkshire-fog and various grasses.
