Common in woodland, scrub, hedgerows, rough grassland and gardens throughout much of southern England, less frequent in south-western and northern England. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight fairly common locally, on heaths and amongst tall grasses on downland. Wingspan 22-25 mm. The most likely confusion species are the very much less common Dotted Border Wave I. sylvestraria, which is very much confined to the heathland of the New Forest and the north-east.
