70.124 [B&F: 1785] Barberry Carpet (Pareulype berberata) ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)

An endangered Red Data Book species, in hedgerows and woodland edges, at six sites in Wiltshire, one in Dorset and one in Gloucestershire, protected under the UK Wildlife and Countryside Act, and a priority species under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. Formerly widespread across much of southern England, northwards to Yorkshire. The single well-established colony in Hampshire was lost when the site was burnt during stubble burning in the 1970s. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 27-32 mm. Fairly unmistakable. Larva feeds on Barberry, over-wintering as a pupa.
