Local on chalk downland, roadside verges, woodland rides, saltmarshes and sea cliffs throughout much of south-eastern England, with isolated colonies north to Yorkshire and North Wales. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight relatively uncommon on chalk downland. Wingspan 16-20 mm. Fairly unmistakable. Larva feeds on herbaceous plants, over-wintering as a pupa.
