Local in woodland, scrub, plantations, hedgerows and gardens, generally restricted to the southern half of England. Widespread and fairly common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 36-38 mm. Small Chocolate-tip C. pigra and Scarce Chocolate-tip C. anachoreta, which see for differences, are similar but far less widely distributed. Larva feeds on Aspen, Poplar and Willow, over-wintering as a pupa.
