Restricted as a resident to a number of fens in East Anglia, and in low density in a small number of freshwater reedbeds in Dorset. It is an immigrant in south and central England (seven were reported in 2019). In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight the only records for the area are of singletons taken at Titchfield Haven in 1948 (Jackson, 1952, Entom. 85:43) and at Shanklin, a worn male on 7th June 1971 and a fresh female on 10th June 1975 (T D Fearnehough, 1975, Ent Rec J Var 87: 212): therein the observer felt that it was likely that the species was locally breeding, but if so there has been no further evidence. Wingspan 32-40 mm. Shape of forewing distinctive: long and narrow, with very oblique termen and very pointed apex. Larva feeds on Common Reed, over-wintering as a pupa.
