Common in grassland, downland, waste ground and roadside verges; 0-800 m (0-1600 m in Europe) throughout much of the British Isles; mainland Europe and southern Scandinavia. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight widespread and common. Wingspan 50-55 mm. Larva feeds on Smooth Meadow-grass and various grasses.
