An endangered Red Data Book species, on sand-dunes on the coasts of south-western England, southern Wales and north-western England, and inland on heaths in Dorset. In Kent, a distinctive pale subspecies occurs locally on Dungeness. In Hampshire still quite frequent on south Hayling, though long since lost from the New Forest, and there has been only one record from the Isle of Wight since 1954. Wingspan male 46-54 mm, female 60-76 mm. Unmistakable. Larva polyphagous on various plants, including Tree Lupin, Bramble, Marram-grass, Kidney Vetch and Bird's-foot Trefoil, over-wintering as an egg.
