A taxon whose true status is clouded by confusion with
A. hartmanniana, from which it is said to be distinguishable by its larger size, the generally darker coloration of the forewing, the more strongly angulate median fascia, and the silver-white spots which usually do not form continuous striae [Bradley]. Many authorities, particularly on the continent, consider the two to be congeners, with the present species an ecotype associated with
Succisa pratensis, Devil's-bit Scabious, and therefore found on dry pastures and downland in parts of the British Isles. The only reliable record in our area was one to light in July 2014 in Portchester, which John Langmaid examined. Wingspan 15-24 mm.
