Nationally scarce (Nb) in woodland and on downland, waste ground and cliffs throughout much of south-western England and southern Ireland; rare in northern England. One was reported from Winchester in 2004 but not retained, and therefore cannot be verified or accepted. Wingspan 14-19 mm. Characterised by the general golden brown coloration of the forewing, the conspicuous costal strigulae, the blackish longitudinal streaks from the basal area to the median fascia and the well-developed ocellus [Bradley]. Larva feeds on flowers and stems of Goldenrod, over-wintering in a cocoon.
