An endangered Red Data Book species, on shingle beaches in south-eastern England, predominantly coastal. Not recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 36-38 mm. The main confusion species is Chocolate-tip C. curtula, but in C. anachoreta the postmedian line passes through the chocolate apical patch, and there are two spots above between the patch and the tornus; see also Small Chocolate-tip C. pigra. Larva feeds on Grey Willow, Sallow, Aspen and Poplar, over-wintering as a pupa.
