Local in parks, gardens, woodland and scrub throughout southern England. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight widespread and fairly common, particularly in suburban area. Wingspan 41-49 mm. The main confusion species are Poplar Grey A. megacephala
and Sweet Gale Moth A. euphorbiae
, but has characteristic S-shaped subterminal band of pale grey blocks. Larva feeds on Horse-chestnut, Sycamore and Field Maple, over-wintering as a pupa.
