2024 Annual Report for: Crambidae / Crambinae

For species seen in 2024 that had less than or equal to 100 records, full details are included; for more common species, the earliest, latest and highest count by vice-county are shown. The narrative for each species is taken from the main Hantsmoths website, and it is possible that some information on abundance and occurrence can get out of date, as it is impossible to keep up with all changes; however it should give a good introduction to each species. The tables in each species account summarise the previous status, and that for the current year.

For the maps, all records prior to 2024 are shown by a blue dot (the larger the dot, the more recent), with the current year's records shown in red. As previous records are superimposed on any report for 2024, new sites have greater emphasis (i.e. will show as 'more red').

In the species accounts, an asterisk next to a location indicates a new 10km square record; earliest ever dates are highlighted in orange, and latest ever in red. Initials in the species accounts refer to the recorders listed here. Please get in touch if you identify any omissions or errors, in particular if you have records that have yet to be submitted. Details of how to submit records can be found here.

63.076 [B&F: 1289] Euchromius ocellea (Haworth, 1811) - Migrant

Rare immigrant from mainland Europe and subtropical regions, recorded in most months of the year throughout the British Isles, predominantly on the south coast. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight a very scarce immigrant, recorded in spring and autumn, occasionally inland, but mostly on the coast. The individual pictured is the 13th county record, and the first since 1998, and was caught in a period of exceptional migrant activity along the south coast. Wingspan 16-27 mm. This species is distinguished from other British pyralids by the pale coloration and terminal band of black and metallic spots [Goater]. Larva feeds on dry vegetable matter, dried goods, cereals and grain, but there is no evidence of breeding in the UK.

In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight common in extensive reed-beds, mostly on the coast, and an occasional wanderer elsewhere, with only a few records from northern Hampshire, at Leckford, Fleet Pond and Old Basing. Wingspan male 24-32 mm, female 30-40 mm. Males are unmistakable; females could be confused with female Schoenobiinae, but in those species the costa is convex towards apex, whereas in C. phragmitella it is distinctly concave [Goater]. Larva feeds within stems of Common Reed and Reed Sweet-grass.

63.110 [B&F: 1324] Pediasia aridella (Thunberg, 1788) - Nationally Scarce B

Nationally scarce (Nb) on coastal saltmarshes in parts of southern and eastern England. In Hampshire mostly confined to the coast, but there are a few records inland in the New Forest, at Hinchelsea Moor, Homlsley, Brockenhurst and Blashford Lakes. Four individuals trapped in 2013 marked the first Isle of Wight records since 1856. Wingspan 20-26 mm. Glossier-winged than P. contaminella, which lacks the fuscous streaking; P. aridella lacks the bar-shaped discal mark characteristic of Agriphila inquinatella, in which the hindwing is devoid of marking [Goater]. Larva feeds on stems of Common Saltmarsh-grass, living within a silken tube or tent.
