2021 Annual Report for: Crambidae / Crambinae
For species seen in 2021 that had less than or equal to 100 records, full details are included; for more common species, the earliest, latest and highest count by vice-county are shown. The narrative for each species is taken from the main Hantsmoths website, and it is possible that some information on abundance and occurrence can get out of date, as it is impossible to keep up with all changes; however it should give a good introduction to each species. The tables in each species account summarise the previous status, and that for the current year.
For the maps, all records prior to 2021 are shown by a blue dot (the larger the dot, the more recent), with the current year's records shown in red. As previous records are superimposed on any report for 2021, new sites have greater emphasis (i.e. will show as 'more red').
In the species accounts, an asterisk next to a location indicates a new 10km square record; earliest ever dates are highlighted in orange, and latest ever in red. 63.077 [B&F: 1290] Chilo phragmitella (Hübner, [1810]) - Local
Local in reed-beds and fens throughout much of England and Wales. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight common in extensive reed-beds, mostly on the coast, and an occasional wanderer elsewhere, with only a few records from northern Hampshire, at Leckford, Fleet Pond and Old Basing. Wingspan male 24-32 mm, female 30-40 mm. Males are unmistakable; females could be confused with female Schoenobiinae, but in those species the costa is convex towards apex, whereas in C. phragmitella it is distinctly concave [Goater]. Larva feeds within stems of Common Reed and Reed Sweet-grass.

Local in fens, marshes, river-banks and gravel pits in parts of southern England and southern Wales, increasing in recent years and an occasional wanderer away from its breeding habitat. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight breeding colonies are widespread, and the moth can be quite common in some areas. Wingspan 23-29 mm. Female larger and plainer than male, but both sexes readily identifiable. Larva feeds within dead stems of Bulrush.

Common in grassland, rough meadows and gardens throughout the British Isles. Widespread and very common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 20-24 mm. Diagnostic, silvery V-shaped postmedian line is always visible. Larva feeds within roots of various grasses, causing sufficient damage to be a serious pest in some areas.

Common in grassland, rough meadows and gardens throughout the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight widespread and fairly common in grassy areas; the dark-coloured ab. obscurellus has been reported from the New Forest and Test Valley. Wingspan 22-25 mm. The longitudinal median streak is cut by a fine dark line, as in C. silvella, C. uliginosellus, C. ericella, C. pratella, C. lathoniellus and C. leucoschalis, which see. Larva feeds within roots of various grasses, living within a silken tube or tent.

Nationally scarce (Nb) in bogs in parts of England and Wales. In Hampshire locally common in the wetter bogs of the New Forest, elsewhere appears to be resident in the Bordon area (vice-county 12). Very rare in the Isle of Wight, most recently in 2010. Wingspan 18-23 mm. Looks whiter than other Crambus in flight, and distinguished by broad white median longitudinal streak which touches costa to half-way [Goater]. Larva feeds on various grasses, living within a silken tube or tent.

Common in grassland and rough meadows throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 18-22 mm. The only confusion species is C. pratella, but C. lathoniellus is smaller, and the median longitudinal streak is narrower with the anterior edge straight, not angulated [Goater]. Larva feeds within roots and lower stems of various grasses.

63.087 [B&F: 1299] Crambus hamella (Thunberg, 1788) - Nationally Scarce B
Nationally scarce (Nb) on dry heathland, in England and southern Scotland. In Hampshire locally common in the New Forest and in similar habitat in the north-east, but extremely scarce elsewhere in the county. Recorded for the first time on the Isle of Wight in 2016, when two were reported on the same night from the west of the island on 24 August, most likely having made the short hop across the Solent from the New Forest. Wingspan 24-27 mm. The characteristically shaped longitudinal stria precludes confusion with any other species [Goater]. Larva feeds on Wavy Hair-grass.

Common in grassland and rough meadows throughout the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight common in boggy areas, where f. warringtonellus predominates, and on chalk downland, more occasional elsewhere. Wingspan 22-29 mm. Creamy white with a silken lustre; f. warringtonellus is heavily streaked; both forms are easily recognised [Goater]. Larva feeds on stems of various grasses, living within a silken gallery at the base of the plant.

Common in grassland and rough meadows throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 25-30 mm. Quite variable in ground colour, but consistently marked, with the main confusion species being A. selasella, from which differs as follows: A. tristella has a distinct facial cone, besides having traces of a subterminal line and yellow or creamy, never white, median longitudinal streak; termen more rounded, less square than in A. selasella; the forewing of A. selasella has a distinctly smoother texture than that of A. tristella [Goater]. Larva feeds within lower stems of various grasses, living within a silken gallery at the base of the plant.

Common in dry grassland and rough meadows throughout the British Isles, less numerous in the north. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 23-29mm. The main confusion species is A. geniculea, but A. inquinatella is variably streaked longitudinally, while A. geniculea has a pair of chevrons across each forewing. Larva feeds on stems of various low grasses, such as Sheep's-fescue, living within a silken gallery at the base of the plant.

Local on dry heathland, sand-dunes and other dry sandy areas throughout much of England; rare in Scotland. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight frequent in the New Forest, widespread but local elsewhere. Wingspan 22-27 mm. Unmistakable: in no other British species does the median streak extend on to the fringe [Goater]. Larva feeds on roots of False-brome and Upright Brome, living within a silken tube or tent.

Local in saltmarshes throughout the British Isles, except for northern Scotland. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight widespread and common. Wingspan 22-30 mm. Can be confused only with certain forms of A. tristella, which has a distinct facial cone, besides having traces of a subterminal line and yellow or creamy, never white, median longitudinal streak, and termen more rounded, less square than in A. selasella [Goater]. Larva feeds on stems and leaves of Common Saltmarsh-grass and Sheep's-fescue, living within a silken gallery.

Common in grassland and rough meadows throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 16-20 mm. One of the commoner species of grass moth (Crambinae), and a frequent visitor to light traps, where recognisable by its small size and broad, pale dorsal streak. Larva feeds within lower stems of Sheep's-fescue and other low grasses, living within a silken gallery.

Common on damp heathland, mosses, fens, marshes, river-banks and other damp areas throughout the British Isles, more numerous in the south-east. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight frequent in the New Forest, but otherwise rather local and uncommon. Wingspan 20-26mm. The main confusion species, which all lack the fine white subterminal line at tip of white stripe, are C. speculalis, C. permutatella and C. osthelderi [Goater]. Larva feeds within roots of grasses such as Cotton-sedge and Tufted Hair-grass.

Common on old walls and buildings throughout much of Britain, more numerous in the south. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight formerly a rather uncommon species favouring villages with old, thatched cottages, but nowadays widespread and common throughout. Wingspan 18-24 mm. The main confusion species, C. verellus, lacks the white median longitudinal stripe of C. falsella [Goater]. Larva feeds on various mosses, often on walls, living within a silken tube or tent.

Nationally scarce (Nb) on dry grassland and golf courses from Hampshire to Essex. In Hampshire, absent from much of the centre of the county, but relatively common in the north-east and south, where a notable site is Sandy Point on Hayling Island. On the Isle of Wight very intermittently recorded, with just one record every ten years on average. Wingspan 20-30 mm. The main confusion species, P. aridella, and P. contaminella both share characteristic resting posture with head down and abdomen pointing obliquely upwards, but P. aridella is more obviously streaked longitudinally. Larva feeds on stems and leaves of grasses such as Sheep's-fescue, living within a silken tube.

Local on coastal shingle and sandy beaches throughout much of southern England, and inland on dry sandy heaths in Breckland. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight locally common on coastal shingle. Wingspan male 12-15 mm, female 10-13 mm. The smallest crambid: general appearance of male not unlike Chrysoteuchia culmella, though much smaller and with quite different cross-lines [Goater]. Larva feeds within roots of various grasses and Sedge.
