2022 Annual Report for: Crambidae / Crambinae

For species seen in 2022 that had less than or equal to 100 records, full details are included; for more common species, the earliest, latest and highest count by vice-county are shown. The narrative for each species is taken from the main Hantsmoths website, and it is possible that some information on abundance and occurrence can get out of date, as it is impossible to keep up with all changes; however it should give a good introduction to each species. The tables in each species account summarise the previous status, and that for the current year.

For the maps, all records prior to 2022 are shown by a blue dot (the larger the dot, the more recent), with the current year's records shown in red. As previous records are superimposed on any report for 2022, new sites have greater emphasis (i.e. will show as 'more red').

In the species accounts, an asterisk next to a location indicates a new 10km square record; earliest ever dates are highlighted in orange, and latest ever in red. Initials in the species accounts refer to the recorders listed here. Please get in touch if you identify any omissions or errors, in particular if you have records that have yet to be submitted. Details of how to submit records can be found here.

63.076 [B&F: 1289] Euchromius ocellea (Haworth, 1811) - Migrant

Rare immigrant from mainland Europe and subtropical regions, recorded in most months of the year throughout the British Isles, predominantly on the south coast. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight a very scarce immigrant, recorded in spring and autumn, occasionally inland, but mostly on the coast. The individual pictured is the 13th county record, and the first since 1998, and was caught in a period of exceptional migrant activity along the south coast. Wingspan 16-27 mm. This species is distinguished from other British pyralids by the pale coloration and terminal band of black and metallic spots [Goater]. Larva feeds on dry vegetable matter, dried goods, cereals and grain, but there is no evidence of breeding in the UK.

63.077 [B&F: 1290] Chilo phragmitella (Hübner, [1810]) - Local

Local in reed-beds and fens throughout much of England and Wales. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight common in extensive reed-beds, mostly on the coast, and an occasional wanderer elsewhere, with only a few records from northern Hampshire, at Leckford, Fleet Pond and Old Basing. Wingspan male 24-32 mm, female 30-40 mm. Males are unmistakable; females could be confused with female Schoenobiinae, but in those species the costa is convex towards apex, whereas in C. phragmitella it is distinctly concave [Goater]. Larva feeds within stems of Common Reed and Reed Sweet-grass.

63.113 [B&F: 1327] Ancylolomia tentaculella (Hübner, 1796) - Migrant

Very rare immigrant from mainland Europe (where abundant, for example, in west-central France), appearing occasionally in southern England. Recorded in our area for the first time when one was trapped in Shanklin, Isle of Wight, July 2019 with two subsequently on the mainland in 2020 and 2022. Wingspan 30-34 mm. While very distinctive compared to the British resident crambids, observers are required to keep a specimen to rule out the closely related and possible migrant A. palpella, which has yet to be recorded in the British Isles. Larva feeds on stems of Cock's-foot and various grasses.
