2022 Annual Report for: Noctuidae / Bryophilinae
For species seen in 2022 that had less than or equal to 100 records, full details are included; for more common species, the earliest, latest and highest count by vice-county are shown. The narrative for each species is taken from the main Hantsmoths website, and it is possible that some information on abundance and occurrence can get out of date, as it is impossible to keep up with all changes; however it should give a good introduction to each species. The tables in each species account summarise the previous status, and that for the current year.
For the maps, all records prior to 2022 are shown by a blue dot (the larger the dot, the more recent), with the current year's records shown in red. As previous records are superimposed on any report for 2022, new sites have greater emphasis (i.e. will show as 'more red').
In the species accounts, an asterisk next to a location indicates a new 10km square record; earliest ever dates are highlighted in orange, and latest ever in red. Initials in the species accounts refer to the recorders listed here. Please get in touch if you identify any omissions or errors, in particular if you have records that have yet to be submitted. 73.082 [B&F: 2292] Tree-lichen Beauty Cryphia algae (Fabricius, 1775) - Recent colonist
Immigrant from mainland Europe, appearing since 1991 as a migrant on the south coast, in some years arriving in sufficient numbers to breed. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight first recorded in modern times in 1991, after which a scarce immigrant predominantly on the Isle of Wight, but since 2008 has become relatively infrequent on the island but increasingly common as a resident species in the south-east of Hampshire. Wingspan 24-30 mm. Larva feeds on various lichens, although has not been found in our area.

73.084 [B&F: 2293] Marbled Beauty Bryophila domestica (Hufnagel, 1766) - Common
Common in orchards and woodland, and around old buildings, dry-stone walls and sea cliffs throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 23-31 mm. Dentate antemedian fascia extends from costa to dorsum, in contrast to superficially similar Marbled Green C. muralis, in which antemedian fascia falls short of dorsum. Larva feeds on various lichens, often on walls and tree trunks.

73.085 [B&F: 2295] Marbled Green Bryopsis muralis (Forster, 1771) - Local
Local in rocky areas and on dry-stone walls throughout much of southern England, predominantly coastal. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight locally common on the coastline of the Island and in the south of the county east of Southampton, here extending some distance inland. Wingspan 26-32 mm. Larva feeds on various lichens, often on walls.
