For species seen in 2023 that had less than or equal to 100 records, full details are included; for more common species, the earliest, latest and highest count by vice-county are shown. The narrative for each species is taken from the main Hantsmoths website, and it is possible that some information on abundance and occurrence can get out of date, as it is impossible to keep up with all changes; however it should give a good introduction to each species. The tables in each species account summarise the previous status, and that for the current year.
For the maps, all records prior to 2023 are shown by a blue dot (the larger the dot, the more recent), with the current year's records shown in red. As previous records are superimposed on any report for 2023, new sites have greater emphasis (i.e. will show as 'more red').
In the species accounts, an asterisk next to a location indicates a new 10km square record; earliest ever dates are highlighted in orange, and latest ever in red. Initials in the species accounts refer to the recorders listed here. Please get in touch if you identify any omissions or errors, in particular if you have records that have yet to be submitted. Details of how to submit records can be found here.
Common in parks, gardens, hedgerows, roadside verges, heathland, moorland and woodland throughout the British Isles. Widespread and very common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 15-19 mm. Straightforward to identify, a good diagnostic feature is the strength of the two forewing fasciae, which are heavy in the costal half, and faint in the dorsal half. Larva feeds on the foliage of woody plants such as Holly, Ivy, Gorse, Broom, Heather, Rowan and Traveller's-joy, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in mature hedgerows, scrub and woodland edges throughout much of England. In Hampshire larvae recorded in numbers from blackthorn in the past, but rather uncommon to light, mostly in the New Forest, and occasionally elsewhere in the county and on the Isle of Wight, where recorded in numbers in some years. Wingspan 17-19 mm. Similar to Green Pug P. rectangulata, but that species has postmedian line strongly toothed near costa, and Sloe Pug usually has salmon-pink (black in Green Pug) band at base of abdomen. Larva feeds on flowers of Blackthorn, over-wintering as an egg.

Uncommon, in coniferous woodland and plantations, in northern England and mid-Wales, with a thin scattering of records elsewhere. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight the occasional records of this species in the area suggest migration, but it is possible that a resident population occurs, as it evidently did at one time in the New Forest. There seems to have been an upturn in records in the 21st Century, and 2012 saw a minor influx with five sightings across all vice-counties. Further reports came in 2019 and 2023. Wingspan 21-25 mm. Large size and prominent discal spot make this a fairly distinctive pug. Larva feeds within young shoots of various coniferous trees, including Norway Spruce, Sitka Spruce, European Silver-fir and Noble Fir, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in calcareous grassland, rough ground and gardens throughout the British Isles; present in most of Hampshire, but distinctly uncommon on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 16-20 mm. The main confusion species is Foxglove Pug E. pulchellata; in Foxglove Pug, the outer edge of the central cross-band is kinked at the costa, while in Toadflax Pug the central cross-band is gently curved at the costa. Larva feeds on Common Toadflax and Snapdragon, often in the capsules, over-wintering as a pupa.

Recent colonist and immigrant in southern England and on the Channel Islands, predominantly coastal. In Hampshire this southern European species was first recorded by John Langmaid in his Southsea trap on 29 June 1995, with another on 30 July that year. Exactly a year later than that last sighting, larvae were discovered in good numbers on Tamarisk on Sinah Common, Hayling, and in 1997 the first adults were captured on the Isle of Wight. Since then, it has become somewhat frequent at light around the coast of the Isle of Wight and coastal Hampshire from Southampton to Hayling, but remains rare to the west of the Test. Larvae remain confined to Hayling on the mainland, but more widespread on Wight. In 2021, there was a surprising sighting on an individual to a light trap in the north-east of Hampshire. Wingspan 13-17 mm. The most likely confusion species is Thyme Pug E. distinctaria, but smaller and lacking the black fascia of Thyme Pug. Larva feeds on Tamarisk, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in deciduous woodland, especially of oak, but also in hedgerows and gardens throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 19-22 mm. One of the earliest species of pug to emerge in Spring; the brown, nominate form often has a distinct white patch dorsad of the small central dot, but the melanistic form is fairly common, and cannot always be reliably separated from melanistic forms of other pug species. For non-melanistic forms, the most likely confusion species is Oak-tree Pug E. dodoneata, which see for differences. It is quite common in many places, and appears to have increased and extended its range in the area since the 1950's. Wingspan 19-22 mm. The most likely confusion species is Brindled Pug E. abbreviata, but Oak Tree Pug is smaller and paler, with a more prominent discal spot.
