For species seen in 2024 that had less than or equal to 100 records, full details are included; for more common species, the earliest, latest and highest count by vice-county are shown. The narrative for each species is taken from the main Hantsmoths website, and it is possible that some information on abundance and occurrence can get out of date, as it is impossible to keep up with all changes; however it should give a good introduction to each species. The tables in each species account summarise the previous status, and that for the current year.
For the maps, all records prior to 2024 are shown by a blue dot (the larger the dot, the more recent), with the current year's records shown in red. As previous records are superimposed on any report for 2024, new sites have greater emphasis (i.e. will show as 'more red').
In the species accounts, an asterisk next to a location indicates a new 10km square record; earliest ever dates are highlighted in orange, and latest ever in red. Initials in the species accounts refer to the recorders listed here. Please get in touch if you identify any omissions or errors, in particular if you have records that have yet to be submitted. Details of how to submit records can be found here.

Common in gardens, woodland, hedgerows, downs, fens, moors and sand-dunes throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 24-27 mm. The oft quoted field mark used to distinguish this species from red forms of Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet X. ferrugata, the notch on the inner edge of the cross-band, close to the costa, has proven to be unreliable, and only moths with black cross-bands can be assigned to this species without dissection of the genitalia. Larva feeds on Bedstraw, Ground-ivy and Dock, over-wintering as a pupa.

Local in woodland rides and edges, thickets, copses, mature hedgerows, embankments and scrubby downland throughout much of England and Wales. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight uncommon, and mostly confined to the chalk; some records may have been undeservedly rejected due to confusion with Common Carpet. Wingspan 28-34 mm. The most likely confusion species is Common Carpet E. alternata but banding on hindwing is almost absent in Wood Carpet, but forms a continuation of the banding on the forewing in Common Carpet. Larva feeds on Lady's Bedstraw and Hedge Bedstraw, over-wintering as a pupa.

Localised in damp woodland insouthern and south-western England, and southern and western Wales. Formerly quite scarce, the 21st century has seen a range expansion from the south-west northwards to Cumbria, across the Midlands into East Anglia. In southern Hampshire, not uncommon in parts of the New Forest, along the edges of damp rides, but very scarce in the north. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 27-30 mm. Most likely to be confused with Water Carpet L. suffumata, but differentiable as below.
While the patterning and wing coloration are quite similar in Lampropteryx otregiata and suffumata, the latter is consistently 25% larger than otregiata, with the forewings having a much sharper apex. The mostly darker median fascia is narrower, its outer boundary forming sharp points on the veins m1 and m2, while this area is more rounded on otregiata. Significantly, suffumata flies almost a month earlier, so when fresh specimens of Devon Carpet are on the wing, Water Carpet will be almost over.
Larva feeds on Marsh Bedstraw and Fen Bedstraw, over-wintering as a pupa.

Extremely common, in woodland, parks and gardens throughout much of the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight abundant throughout: the map shows an unjustified bias towards the New Forest. Wingspan male 28-33 mm, female wingless. For a comparison of this species and the closely related Northern Winter Moth, click here. Larva polyphagous on most broad-leaved trees and shrubs, causing sufficient damage to be a serious pest in some areas, especially in orchards.

VC11: West Walk, one, male det gen, 08 Nov (F.M.G. det. RJD)
Common in ancient and mature broad-leaved woodland throughout much of the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight the species declined alarmingly from the middle of the 20th Century. In the 1940s, it used to be so common as to be described as 'literally swarming', but a 1992 sighting in Barry Goater's Chandlers Ford garden was the only record there for many years in an area where it was previously common. Still relatively widespread on the Isle of Wight, and in the woodlands inland of Southampton with scattered records elsewhere. Wingspan 20-22 mm. Distinguished from superficially similar species by small size and pure white ground colour. Larva feeds on Hazel, Hornbeam, Silver Birch, Downy Birch and Wild Rose, over-wintering as a pupa.

Nationally scarce (Nb) in woodland, scrubby heathland and on sea cliffs in southern England and Wales. Has decreased in numbers considerably since coppicing went out of favour, but does appear to be expanding its range in Sussex. In Hampshire appears sporadically at sites such as Oxenbourne Down and Swanwick HWT, but does not seem to survive in any one site for more than a few years. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 27-30 mm. Welsh Wave Venusia cambrica is superficially similar, but Welsh Wave has a more clearly demarcated pale central band which is bordered by thin black fascia. Larva feeds on Sweet Chestnut, Alder, Downy Birch, Silver Birch and Sallow, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in open woodland and hedgerows, and on downland and calcareous grassland throughout much of southern England and Wales. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight like Small Waved Umber H. vitalbata, depends upon Clematis, but unlike this species, has declined considerably in recent years, and is seen most frequently on the downs. Wingspan 31-36 mm. Characterised by streak on dorsum at one third, and streak on abdomen, which together form a single streak when the moth is in its natural resting posture, but see the recently discovered close relative Cryptic Fern H. radicaria which occurs in our area. Larva feeds on Traveller's-joy and Cultivated Clematis.

Very closely related to the more common and widespread Fern H. tersata, H. radicaria was added to the British list from a specimen taken in East Sussex on 22 May 2019, and a number more from East Sussex and Kent in 2020 indicate that it is now resident locally in those two counties; retrospective records from East Sussex in 1990 and Kent in 2004 and 2007 make it probable that it has been present for a number of years. The species does appear to have experienced a north and westward range expansion on the near continent, so its arrival may be relatively recent. The first for our area were recorded on Hayling Island in 2020, since which it has been recorded increasingly frequently. See Clancy and Smith in Atropos: 66 for more details.
Adults should be photographed and retained for dissection, as distinguishing features between radicaria and tersata are subtle, especially if the moth is worn. The above quoted article has full details, but in summary radicaria has a longer, more defined apical streak, stronger cross-lines and darker forewing tone. Like its congener, the larval foodplant is Traveller's-joy Clematis vitalba. Both species are double-brooded in Britain, found between May and early September.

Nationally scarce (Na) in damp woodland, fens and marshes, in isolated colonies from Somerset to Yorkshire. In Hampshire very local in marshy woodland amongst the foodplant, and pretty much confined to the New Forest and east Dorset heaths. Formerly very rare on the Isle of Wight, a colony was discovered at Afton Marsh in 2010 where it is obviously well established. Wingspan 20-24 mm. More likely to be confused with Brown Scallop Philereme vetulata than any of the other pug species. Larva feeds on flowers and leaves of Yellow Loosestrife, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common throughout much of southern Britain; widely distributed and fairly common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight: distribution of accepted records indicates that efformata is more likely in calcareous habitats than plagiata: the present species appears to be the more common on the Isle of Wight and in the New Forest but it is unclear whether this is a true reflection of status. Wingspan 37-43 mm. The main confusion species is Lesser Treble-bar A. efformata, but innermost fascia usually more sharply angled in that species. The most reliable separating characteristic on males is that plagiata has elongated, pointed claspers giving rise to a narrow abdomen tip: efformata has a blunter tip to the abdomen with rather shorter, curved claspers. Larva feeds on St John's-worts Hypericum sp.

Common on heathland, moorland, open woodland, hedgerows and gardens throughout much of the British Isles, a species of conservation concern under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight relatively common in thickets of broom, but under-recorded on account of the lateness of its season and the fact that it does not come readily to light. Wingspan 35-38 mm. Fairly unmistakable. Larva feeds on Broom, over-wintering as an egg.

Nationally scarce (Na) on chalk downland, in scrub, hedgerows and open woodland, discontinuously in Britain from Sussex to Cumbria, a priority species under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. In Hampshire once common in Crab Wood, but most of the old privet bushes were grubbed up in making the car-park and other facilities for the Country Park and repeated efforts to relocate the moth have failed; in recent years only recorded from a few sites in the county, for example, Broughton Down, Martin Down, Harewood Forest and Leckford. Up until 2005 there had been only two records for the Isle of Wight, but since found to be present on at least two downland sites. Wingspan 33-36 mm. Unmistakable. Larva feeds on Wild Privet and Ash, over-wintering as a pupa.
